Music Therapy Practicum experience

My practicum experience at Capilano

University included extensive on-sight

apprenticeship at a variety of locations.

High involvement of Capilano Staff

as well as other experienced music

therapists and educators insured for

maximum growth and development. Skills

acquired include but were not limited to: Communicating

daily goals and reports with a team, formal charting, music therapy research including quantitative data collecting, creating consent forms, creating analysis tools and completing qualitative case studies.

                   Vancouver Costal Health, VGH

Plastics and Burns unit.

Music therapy has shown to

be very effective with anxiety and pain

in the perioperative and trauma experience.

                            Studies show that up to 50% of analgesic

medication can be saved when using music therapy than without. This affects patient anxiety level, and in turn their immune system resulting in decreased risk of infection and shorter hospital stays.

My responsibilities as a student music therapist here included;

Provide music therapy intervention services to young adults, adults and elderly in the plastics and burns unit. Provided patient care specializing in relaxation, anxiety, mental illness, delirium, dementia, pain management and spiritual care and verbal counseling

Windsor Secondary School,

North Vancouver.

                                    There is extensive literature on the

motivational and educational effects

of music therapy and children. I have

seen the positive results first hand and

 have experienced how music therapy is

an important asset to a behavioral and

educational team. Studies show music therapy significantly increases attention span, effects mood, enhances memory and motivates learning. (to name a few!) The supportive team environment at Windsor Secondary school showed me that my passion in music therapy lies with youth.

My responsibilities as a student music therapist included;

Coordinated and provided music therapy sessions for teenagers with wide range of cognitive, physical and behavioral needs. Worked with a team of specialists and educators to develop new behavioral programs specific to individual needs including speech and behavior therapists.Worked with educators to achieve IEP goals in a classroom environment.

Long term care facilities are

where most music therapists work.

The main goal of a music therapist working

with Alzheimer’s and dementia clients is to provide

social, spiritual and cognitive interventions. Music therapy is often prescribed in larger groups at “sun-down” (a time of increased confusion as the sun sets) as an alternative to sedation and anti-anxiety medication. In a world where a client does not know who or where they are, music can hold them in a safe and predictable space.

My responsibilities as a student music therapist here included;

Coordinate individual, and group music therapy sessions. Provide music therapy intervention services for elderly clients with both mental illness and dementia on a locked word.
